The United States Senate has voted 94-0 Friday to impose new sanctions on Iran, building on restrictions targeting the country’s oil and financial industries. The amendment, which is attached to the Senate’s defense authorization bill, would formally designate Iran’s energy, port, shipping, and ship-building sectors for facilitating Iranian proliferation, and would penalize individuals for selling materials used to advance Iran’s naval and nuclear infrastructure. The legislation follows the publication by the Associated Press of a computer-generated graph allegedly produced by Iranian nuclear scientists indicating that Iran has conducted computer simulations designed to produce a nuclear weapon. The $631 billion defense bill is expected to be passed next week.
