The U.S. Senate has passed its $631 billion defense authorization bill, which includes an amendment leveling new sanctions against Iran, by a vote of 98-0. Analysts linked the unanimous vote, which was only the second in 51 years on the defense bill, to the bipartisan consensus on American defense policy. The new Iran sanctions especially target infrastructure related to Iran’s Iran’s energy, port, shipping, and ship-building infrastructure, and were attached to the legislation in an amendment that unanimously passed 94-0.
