Turkish PM: Government “Won’t Show Any More Tolerance” To Protesters

Photos and video are emerging from Turkey this evening after police again attempted to disperse protesters who had assembled as part of ongoing anti-government demonstrations that began several weeks ago. Police fired volleys of tears gas and turned water cannons against those who had assembled. Bloomberg and Associated Press reports are embedded below.

Tens of thousands of protesters had poured into Turkey’s main cities over the weekend calling for Erdogan’s resignation.

The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded by vowing Tuesday morning that his government “won’t show any more tolerance” to protesters participating in the demonstrations:

[Th]e premier made no mention of the olive branch on Tuesday and resumed his tough stance against the demonstrators who have thrown up the biggest challenge yet to his decade-long rule. “This episode is now over. We won’t show any more tolerance,” he told lawmakers of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in a speech broadcast live on television.

“They say the prime minister is rough. So what was going to happen here? Were we going to kneel down in front of these (people)?” “If you call this roughness, I’m sorry, but this Tayyip Erdogan won’t change.”

The attacks on protesters have generated U.S. and European Union criticism of Erdogan and his administration.

Erdogan earlier this week called on his supporters to stage mass demonstrations in support of him and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), a move that observers worry will deepen the violence convulsing the country.
