Top Iran Military Figure Killed Traveling Between Syria and Lebanon

A top Iranian military official was reportedly killed by Syrian opposition forces Tuesday while traveling between Syria and Lebanon. Gen. Hassan Shateri, identified by Iranian opposition groups as a member of the Quds Force, the foreign arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, is thought to have been the chief IRGC leader in Lebanon. Shateri’s presence in Syria will renew concerns about the degree to which Iran and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah are involved in propping up the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, which has been locked in a three-way proxy war against increasingly Islamist opposition forces backed by Sunni states and regional Kurdish groups.
