The P5+1 began its latest round of talks with Iran today in Kazakhstan. Analysts worry that Iran will agree to temporarily suspend its enrichment – some leaks have indicated that the target timeframe is for six months – only to use the time to build up its critical nuclear infrastructure. The result would be a scenario under which Iran would have a “virtual arsenal” and could rush across the nuclear finish line as soon as it made a political decision to do so. Both sides are still maneuvering, however. Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili recently declared that the country would harden its negotiating stance after the country’s June presidential election. His speech sits uneasily alongside punditry indicating that Iran and its Supreme Leader would like to make concessions to the P5+1, but are waiting until after the election to do so.
