Muslim Brotherhood supporters are staging major shows of strength in Jordan, following up a rally on Thursday with another on Friday. Jordan’s King Abdullah dissolved the country’s parliament on Thursday, setting up a new election which the Muslim Brotherhood has announced it will boycott. The boycott appears designed to undermine the legitimacy of the election, as the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamic Action Front (IAF) represents the country’s only genuine political opposition, and to trigger a crisis in Jordan’s political institutions. Were the Muslim Brotherhood able to overthrow Jordan’s political system and seize control in Jordan as it has done in some Arab Spring countries, the geopolitical consequences might be severe. Jordanian Palestinians form the bulk of the Brotherhood’s support in Jordan and could be expected to demand revisions to Jordan’s peace treaty with Israel, destabilizing the region and undermining the efficacy of signed agreements between Israel and its neighborhoods.
