Israel’s Mount Hermon Struck By Syrian Mortars

Mortars from across the Syrian border have again struck Israel’s Golan Heights, this time exploding in a popular Israeli tourist destination during the country’s Shavout holiday celebrations. Israeli officials closed the area to evaluate the incident, before concluding that the fire had been accidental.

It was the first time that Mount Hermon – Israel’s highest point – had been hit by rockets and mortars linked to the Syrian conflict. Other parts of the Golan Heights, in contrast, have been repeatedly struck by gunfire and mortars.

The mortar fire will deepen concerns regarding the increasing anarchy in and around Syria’s border with Israel. Last month saw the largest Syrian redeployment in decades take place, with Syrian armed forces moving closer to the country’s center. U.N. peacekeepers, meanwhile, have been withdrawing from their posts in response to kidnappings by the hard line Islamist elements who have taken advantage of the power vacuum to move into the area.
