Israelis Head To Polls To Elect Country’s 19th Knesset

Israelis head to the polls today to elect the country’s 19th Knesset, capping off three months of campaigning in which polls converged early and remained largely consistent in dividing votes between Israel’s center-right and center-left. Voters are expected, as they have been since incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced elections three months ago, to reelect a majority center-right bloc anchored by the Netanyahu’s Likud Party. Despite a highly watched meeting between Israeli opposition figures in the middle of the election season, Israel’s center-left was unable to coalesce and will likely be left in the opposition. There are 10,000 polling stations scattered across Israel, and the country’s Central Elections Committee is reporting high turnout in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and heavily Arab towns and areas. Exit polls will be released after polling closes at 10 p.m. local time, or 3 p.m. EST.
