Hezbollah Fighters Deploy Throughout Syria As Israel Warns Against Provocations

Hezbollah fighters are now reportedly moving toward the country’s southern border with Jordan. If the reports are confirmed they would indicate that the Iran-backed terror group has functionally deployed throughout large swaths of Syria:

Hizbullah fighters have been advancing swiftly into southern Syria and have reached the flashpoint southern town of Daraa near the border with Jordan, media reports said on Tuesday. A source close to Hizbullah told the Kuwaiti al-Qabas newspaper that Hizbullah fighters played a significant role in helping the regime troops to take full power of the strategic town of Kherbet Ghazleh near the highway linking the capital Damascus with Jordan.

The source pointed out that Hizbullah fighters are not just groups backing the army regime but comprehensive fighting units that includes a full logistic team. It said that Hizbullah’s military leadership is organizing the transfer of the units and providing them with weapons.

Hezbollah militarily and politically dominates Lebanon. The group has poured thousands of soldiers into Syria to fight on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

These developments come as Arabic media outlets are conveying statements to the effect that Assad is urging Hezbollah to attack Israel from the Golan Heights. Last week Hezbollah threatened to attack Israel in the aftermath of air strikes on advanced Iranian weapons stationed in Syria. The air strikes were widely attributed to Israel, which has committed to acting against attempts to provide such weapons to Hezbollah.

An Israeli official contacted the New York Times Wednesday to emphasize that the Jewish state is willing to conduct further air strikes to prevent transfers:

The Israeli official said: “Israel is determined to continue to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah. The transfer of such weapons to Hezbollah will destabilize and endanger the entire region.” “If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel, or tries to strike Israel through his terrorist proxies,” the official said, “he will risk forfeiting his regime, for Israel will retaliate.”
