Former Lebanon Prime Minister Lashes Out Against Hezbollah

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora lashed out against Hezbollah on Sunday, blasting the Iranian-backed organization for trying to drag Lebanon into another war with Israel. Siniora critized Hezbollah for dispatching a drone to penetrate Israeli airspace “at an Iranian behest.” The still-developing controversy threatens to become a replay of the lead-up to the second Lebanon war that Hezbollah provoked with a raid across the Israeli border in 2006. Hezbollah’s ongoing provocations against Israel on behalf of Iran further undermine foreign policy analysis suggesting that Hezbollah is undergoing a process of “Lebanonization” that would see the group acting to promote Lebanese rather than Iranian interests. Once popular among Middle East analysts, the “Lebanonization” theory has not fared well in recent years.
