President Barack Obama may speak at Bar-Ilan University during his visit next month, Hebrew-language Israeli media is reporting.
The location would be significant in that the university – just outside Tel Aviv in Ramat Gan – was the venue for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s landmark 2009 address in which the prime minister publicly endorsed the creation of a Palestinian state for the first time.
Officials have emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program and the crisis in Syria will top the agenda for Obama’s visit, currently scheduled for March 20. The president and Netanyahu are also expected to discuss options to advance stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, but White House Spokesman Jay Carney has said the president will not be bringing “specific Middle East peace process proposals.”
Obama has not visited Israel since the president’s first inauguration.
