Holocaust denying Gilad Atzmon – identified by The Atlantic as a “jazz saxophonist who lives in London and who has a side gig disseminating the wildest sort of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories” – is blasting anti-Israel “boycott, divestment, and sanctions” (BDS) supporters, who are in turn criticizing British MP George Galloway for a recent stunt in which Galloway stormed out of an Oxford debate after learning that his sparring partner was Israeli. The BDS activists are emphasizing that while they endorse economically suffocating the Jewish state, they reject targeting individual Israeli Jews. Atzmon disagrees.
Meanwhile the organizer of the debate, medical student Mahmood Naji (Twitter), has published an open letter describing himself as having been “humiliated” when Galloway walked out:
Please know that I had been looking forward to seeing you put forward the case for Palestine and the Palestinian people. Instead I was left humiliated in front of a room full of people who had waited an hour and a half for your arrival, only to be subsequently accused of being deceptive and misleading. Does that seem fair to you Mr. Galloway?
The letter also addresses Galloway’s charges, issued via Iranian government media, that Naji misled the Respect MP by failing to disclose that his debate opponent was Israeli:
It is strange that someone who takes such a hard-line view on debating Israelis should omit to ask whether or not his Jewish, pro-Israeli opponent, who has debated in Israel, is in fact Israeli. Your secretary did not go on to ask me about Eylon’s nationality – indeed I did not know until the debate that Eylon is an Israeli – and even had I known Eylon’s nationality, I was not aware of your staunch (and damaging) stance of boycotting Israeli individuals… Should I let you know if your opponent is a vegetarian in case you have a policy of not debating vegetarians? Am I misleading you if I do not tell you your opponent’s shoe size?
Galloway’s politics have earned him notoriety over his quarter century in parliament. The 58-year-old has gone on record praising Saddam Hussein, endorsing the terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah, and describing the Soviet Union’s demise as the “biggest catastrophe” of his life. He draws the line at arguing with Israelis.
Last week Julian Huppert, a Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, described Galloway’s behavior as “pathetic.”
