Spanish Court Rejects City’s Anti-Israel Boycott

A Spanish district court has scrapped an anti-Semitic boycotts resolution passed by the municipal council of Ayamonte in southwest Spain, prohibiting any association or economic agreement with Israeli companies and organizations, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.

The ruling was made September 4 in response to legal actions taken by ACOM, an anti-BDS organization in Spain, which has spearheaded the fight against more than 100 municipal and regional council anti-Israel resolutions. In recent years, ACOM’s actions have led to the scrapping, annulment or suspension of approximately 35 motions to boycott Israel by Spanish municipalities.

These anti-Israel resolutions include provisions prohibiting the municipality or local authority from entering into contracts and agreements with Israeli companies and entities, and even banning business ties and agreements with Spanish citizens, who are associated with Israel or Israeli organizations and companies.

On May 25th, 2017, the City Council of Ayamonte passed a resolution that engaged the municipal in the boycott campaign against Israel. This campaign was led by Recuperemos Ayamonte, the local franchise of the radical-left Podemos party in the city and passed with the support of the Socialist party and Communist party.

However, earlier this month, the Huelva Court Number 1 ruled that the anti-Israel resolution “compromises Article 14 of the Spanish Constitution by inciting and producing discrimination over circumstances of birth, race, gender, religion, opinion or any other personal or social circumstances.”

ACOM President Ángel Mas, reacted to the ruling, saying, “We will continue to stop the BDS extreme movement from infiltrating the institutions of all the Spanish citizens and from breaking the democratic, pluralistic and open nature of our institutions.”

He continued: “The excluding measures against the Jewish minority, supported by parties like Podemos, violate the common framework of coexistence and promote the discrimination based on ethnic or national origin.”

The anti-Semitic boycotts movement against the Jewish State recently spilled over into Latin America. In the Chilean city Valdivia, the municipal passed an anti-Israel resolution advocated by left-wing, pro-Palestinian groups in Chile which was very similar to those advanced by Podemos in Spain.
