WATCH: Netanyahu Says, “I Will Never Stop Advocating for Peace with The Iranian People”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again reached out to the Iranian people using social media. In a World Cup-themed video, Netanyahu compared the courage displayed by the Iranian World Cup team in defending against Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, to the courage of those Iranians protesting the regime.

Netanyahu was referring to one of the most talked about moments of the ongoing World Cup tournament, when Iran’s goalkeeper, Alireza Beiranvand, blocked a penalty shot by Portugal’s star, Ronaldo, who rarely misses such kicks.

It is this quality, Netanyahu said, that will allow Iranians to deal with the problems of “air pollution, water scarcity, billions wasted on terror.”

Netanyahu asked, “Can you imagine what would happen if the Iranian government, instead of wasting your money in Syria, in Yemen and unnecessary wars in the Middle East, would start investing it in solving these problems in Iran?”

The prime minister answered that the solution to Iran’s problems lay with the Iranian people.

Toward that end, Netanyahu said that he had offered aid to Iran in the wake of a devastating earthquake in November of last year. It’s also why he “opened a Farsi Telegram group to teach water conservation to Iranian farmers,” referring to his appeal to Iranians two weeks ago.

Because of his faith in the courage of the Iranian people, Netanyahu said, “I’ll never stop advocating for peace with the Iranian people.” He also expressed his hope that one day he will be able to watch the Israeli soccer team play the Iranian team in a “free Tehran.”

It is not clear to what degree Netanyahu’s earlier appeal has had an effect on ordinary Iranians, but shortly after he posted his video, Israel’s foreign ministry reported that there was a social media campaign in Iran using the hashtag #WeStandWithIsrael.

This week, protesters chanted “Death to Palestine,” an apparent rebuke to the regime’s support for Palestinian terror groups while it diverts resources from its own citizens.

On Tuesday, a Twitter post showed an Iranian identified as Ash sending a message to Israel, that he is “Hoping for a day that the people of Iran and Israel” will “be connected as in the past.”
