As Anti-Semitism Scandal Expands, MPs Blast Corbyn for Meeting with Jewish Anti-Israel Group

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been attacked by his own MPs for “irresponsible and dangerous” behavior, after he attended a Passover event hosted by a far-Left Jewish group, which called for the destruction of Israel and dismissed the anti-Semitism crisis engulfing the party as “faux-outrage,” the BBC reported Tuesday.

Corbyn attended a Passover Seder in his constituency organized by Jewdas, a group which last week accused the Jewish Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council and Jewish Labour Movement of “playing a dangerous game with people’s lives.” The leading Jewish communal bodies had encouraged their community to take to the streets to protest widespread anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

Jewdas claims that charges of anti-Semitism are “the work of cynical manipulations by people whose express loyalty is to the Conservative party and the right wing of the Labour party.” It previously called for the destruction of the Jewish State, calling Israel a “steaming pile of sewage which needs to be properly disposed of.”

The row comes days after Corbyn promised “watertight” investigations into claims of anti-Semitism within his party. In a statement on social media, Labour MP John Woodcock said meeting the group gave the message that “extreme views are OK”. Another Labour MP, Angela Smith, said Corbyn’s attendance was a “blatant dismissal” of the case to tackle anti-Semitism in the party.

Corbyn’s participation also led to sharp criticism from the Jewish community. The chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, Karen Pollock, said on Twitter it was “mocking and disrespectful”.

The Jewish Labour Movement said Corbyn’s decision to take part in the event “topped off the worst week on record of awful relations between the Labour Party and the Jewish community”. Jonathan Arkush, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: “If Jeremy Corbyn goes to their event, how can we take his stated commitment to be an ally against anti-Semitism seriously?”

Last week, Corbyn’s appointed Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott – who, if Labour were elected to government, would be in charge of hate crimes in the country, including anti-Semitism – dismissed concerns about anti-Jewish sentiments in the party as a “smear campaign” by Corbyn’s enemies.
