Netflix Expands its Offerings in Israel, Plans to Buy More Local Content

A year and a half after launching in Israel, the global streaming service Netflix has greatly expanded its offerings, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.

While initially Israeli viewers had access to some 10% of the Netflix catalogue, now they will be able to watch many of the service’s most popular offerings, including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, The Crow, 13 Reasons Why, and Narcos.

According to Yann Lafargue, manager of corporate communications for Europe, Middle East, and Africa for Netflix, all Netflix content will be available for streaming in Israel.

“We are planning to buy more [local content] and we hope to announce some local projects before the end of the year,” he added.

Netflix offers a number of Israeli series internationally, including Srugim (Devout Love), Fauda, Bnei Aruba (Hostages), Hatufim (Prisoners of War), and Hamidrasha (Mossad 101).

In addition to increasing the number of offerings to Israeli customers, now some 75% of international Netflix content will be dubbed or subtitled in Hebrew. Billing will also be available in shekels.

Last month, both Bloomberg and Variety covered Israel’s growing reputation as a producer of quality entertainment. The popularity of Israeli television exports has been spurred by the growth of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon.
