Israel to Issue New Banknotes Featuring Female Poets

The Bank of Israel on Tuesday revealed its updated designs for the 20 and 100 shekel bills, which feature the portraits of Hebrew-language female poets, The Times of Israel reported.

Although former Prime Minister Golda Meir was featured on the NIS 10 bill, which was issued in 1985 and circulated until the 1990s, no current denominations include pictures of women.

Meir’s portrait was also included on the 10,000 shekel bill before the shekel was replaced by the new Israeli shekel in 1985. A number of women were similarly featured on the Israeli pound currency before it was supplanted by the shekel in 1980.

The new NIS 20 will be red and feature an image of Rachel Bluwstein, who is known in Israel as Rachel the Poetess. The back of the bill will have words from her poem “Kinneret,” with a picture of the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The new NIS 20 bill. [Photo: Bank of Israel]

Leah Goldberg, one of Israel’s best known and acclaimed poets, will be featured on the orange NIS 100 bill. The reverse will include a picture of a deer accompanied by words from her poem “White Days.”

The new banknotes will join the NIS 50, which includes a portrait of Russian-born Hebrew poet Shaul Tchernihovsky, and the NIS 200, which features Polish-born playwright, poet and journalist Nathan Alterman.
