Suicide Bombers Kill 41 in Turkish Airport Attack

Three suicide bombers opened fire before detonating themselves in Istanbul’s main international airport on Tuesday, killing 41 people and injuring over 230 others.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said there were indications that the Islamic State was involved, yet there has been no official claim of responsibility for the assault.

Security camera footage showed a police officer shooting one of the attackers inside the terminal building before the man fell down and, some 20 seconds later, detonated himself.

Authorities cancelled all outgoing flights and passengers were ferried to hotels, a Turkish Airlines official told Reuters. An airport official added that some incoming flights had been diverted.

Turkey has sustained a series of bombings this year, including two suicide attacks attributed to the Islamic State and two car bombings claimed by Kurdish militants.

Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS and is also fighting Kurdish separatist groups in the country’s largely Kurdish southeast.
