Orange Is the New Black Star: “There Are Apparently No Ugly Women in Israel”

One of the stars of the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black is visiting Israel in honor of Tel Aviv’s gay pride week and seems to be amazed by the attractiveness of local women.

“There are apparently no ugly women in Israel,” Lea DeLaria told Ynet shortly after arriving on Tuesday.

DeLaria, who plays a gay inmate nicknamed Big Boo on the award-winning prison drama, is also gay and an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights in real life.

While she was assaulted and hospitalized multiple times over her sexual orientation in the past, much has changed for DeLaria in recent years. Today, when a group of teenagers approaches her on the street, she says they likely want to take a picture with her, rather than attack her.

DeLaria has already visited several landmarks in Israel, including the remains of King Herod’s palace in Jerusalem, though she indicated that she was barred from entering the Temple Mount complex by Islamic Waqf authorities.

The Muslims wouldn’t let me in because I am a woman with tattoos. Who knew? @televiv #telavivpride2016

Tel Aviv has been cited by a number of publications as a top destination for gays and lesbians, and first hosted a gay pride event in 1993. Tel Aviv Pride will end with a parade on Friday, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of participants and culminate with a beach party that typically continues until the following morning.
