Killer’s Brother Arrested, Manhunt Continues as Tel Aviv Mourns Victims

The manhunt for the suspect accused of committing a shooting spree in the heart of Tel Aviv on Friday is continuing, while Israeli authorities have arrested the man’s brother.

Jaudat Milhem was arrested on Friday under suspicion of being an accomplice to the murder allegedly committed by his brother Nashat. Two people were killed in the shooting and six more wounded. The two victims, Alon Bakal, and Shimon Ruimi, were buried Sunday.

As the police continue to search for Nashat Milhem, nearly half of all students in northern Tel Aviv were kept home from school on Sunday by their parents due to security concerns.

Nashat Milhem had previously served five years in prison for trying to seize the gun of an Israeli soldier. Police said Sunday that an “item” belonging to Milhem was found in northern Tel Aviv that could help authorities track him. Security officials believe that the best chance to catch him is to wait for him to come out of hiding for food or transportation.

Authorities also believe that Milhem killed a Bedouin cab driver in north Tel Aviv, whose body was found about an hour after the shooting Friday.

Melhem’s father, a volunteer with the Israeli police, recognized him in the video from surveillance cameras and called the authorities to identify his son. “We all condemn the event,” the father told the Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot. “I don’t know from where this disaster came upon us. My son was in therapy. We didn’t have a feeling that he wanted to perpetrate any unusual act.”
