In Latest Shot at American Allies, Iranian General Predicts Collapse of Saudi Arabia

Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), predicted in a speech that “the House of Saud is on the edge of disintegration and collapse,” The New York Times reported Monday.

“The House of Saud is on the edge of disintegration and collapse,” General Jafari said, referring to the Saudi royal family. “Regional and international analysts have talked about it a lot, and we hope that it will come true.”

While the Times report portrayed the remarks as “sign of deteriorating relations” between the two countries, it also noted that Jafari said that “The final cause and goal of the Islamic Revolution is creating an Islamic civilization. And we do our best to develop in the path of creating Islamic civilization.” This statement reinforced analyses that despite engaging in nuclear diplomacy, the Iranian regime is not moderating its behavior towards the United States or its traditional allies.

Iran’s state-owned PressTV also reported on the general’s remarks.

Today, Saudi Arabia is brazenly and obnoxiously bombarding and massacring a nation, which is seeking the denial of the hegemonic system,” said commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari on Monday. …

He called on Iranian officials to pull no punches in hitting out at Saudi Arabia over its aggression against Yemen, saying, “Now that the attacks have been launched [against Yemen], no considerations should be shown” for Riyadh.

He further called Saudi Arabia a “betrayer,” saying, “Today, Saudi Arabia, the betrayer, is following in the footsteps of Israel and the Zionists.”

In an analysis of Jafari’s claim, Washington Post blogger and Tufts University professor Daniel Drezner argued that “the claims of the House of Saud’s demise have been somewhat exaggerated,” observing that the recent succession of King Abdullah by his half-brother King Salman was smooth and orderly.

Jafari has recently threatened Israel, and in the past acknowledged that Iran shared its missile technology with Hamas. Jafari has also boasted of Iran’s support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
