ISIS in Libya Releases New Execution Video, Threatens All Christians in Middle East

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) released a 29-minute-long video on Sunday showing the executions of two different groups of Ethiopian Christians in Libya, where the organization continues to entrench itself.

One group, wearing orange jumpsuits, was marched and then beheaded on a beach, believed to be along the Mediterranean coast. A second group wearing black jumpsuits were shot in the head.

The captured prisoners, who according to ISIS were “adherents of the Ethiopian church,” apparently refused to convert to Islam. The ISIS militants are seen taking down crosses and replacing them with flags of ISIS.  The organization then threatened all Christians in the Middle East, saying that if they do not convert to Islam they will suffer the same fate.

According to a Ynet report, one of the two executed groups may actually have consisted of Egyptian Coptic Christians, similar to executions shown in a video broadcast earlier this year in which the group murdered 21 Copts in Libya. The brutal murder of Egyptian Christians was met with horror by Egyptians, who responded with military airstrikes against ISIS targets in Libya.

Libya has descended into chaos after the fall of longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi in 2011. ISIS has gained a significant foothold in Libya during the past months, mainly in its eastern areas. Last month, a major jihadist group in Libya swore allegiance to ISIS.
