Mayor and His Security Detail Apprehend Assailant after Jerusalem Stabbing Attack

An yeshiva student was stabbed and moderately injured before his assailant was apprehended by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and his bodyguards, Ha’aretz reported today.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspected assailant is an 18-year-old illegal Palestinian resident.

According to a paramedic who was at the scene, the man was stabbed in the stomach, and was taken for medical treatment fully conscious and in a stable condition.

“My bodyguard and I jumped straight out of the car, he drew his weapon and together we caught the terrorist until police arrived, and we took care of the wounded, who, happily, was only lightly wounded,” Ha’aretz quoted the mayor as saying.

The Times of Israel, citing Army Radio, reported that the victim avoided serious injury using a wedding gift to block the knife. The Times of Israel also reported that the police presence in the center of Jerusalem has increased.

The were a number of stabbing attacks in Israel late last year following sustained Palestinian incitement  in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the West Bank. In January, a suspect in a multiple stabbing attack in a West Bank supermarket was apprehended by a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security detail.

A video of the stabbing and the subsequent apprehension of the suspect and treatment of the victim was caught on a security camera.

The Algemeiner reported that Barkat had saved a woman wounded in a terror attack eleven years ago.
