Two Israelis were stabbed in an apparent terror attack in a Rami Levy supermarket outside of Jerusalem today. The attacker was shot and wounded while two suspects are being questioned.
The Times of Israel reports:
The assault took place at a Rami Levy supermarket in the Mishor Adumim industrial zone, east of Jerusalem near the settlement of Maaleh Adumim at about 4:30 p.m. …
One of the injured was a paramedic who fought with the attacker, according to an eyewitness.
The assailant was identified as a 16-year-old from the West Bank town Al-Azariya on the outskirts of Jerusalem, who arrived at the supermarket with two accomplices from his hometown.
According to the Times, the attacker started stabbing people waiting in the checkout line, injuring two men in their fifties. The security guard who shot the assailant was not employed by the store, but was shopping at the time. He has been identified as a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security detail. The Prime Minister told the guard that his actions “prevented a major attack.”
The store re-opened a few hours after the attack.
Both the supermarket chain’s owner and the mayor of Maale Adumim insist that nothing will change on account of the terror attack.
“We will not let this affect us or change our routine. We will prove to them that they will not defeat us,” Levy said.
Maaleh Adumim Mayor Benny Kashriel stressed that although there would be inevitable demands for Palestinians to be banned from the industrial zone, he was committed to ensuring that they continue to work at Mishor Adumim and make a decent living.
The Rami Levy chain has been cited as a model of coexistence between Jews and Arabs. In the video embedded below, Levy discusses his vision.
