Yazidi Refugees Assisted by Israeli Aid Workers

Ynet reported today that a team of four Israelis from IsraAID flew to Iraqi Kurdistan to help other NGO’s assisting Yazidi refugees from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The main focus was the Yazidi refugees, who appeared tired and beaten after a long journey. The four Israelis worked with the others to supply the refugees with food, mattresses, tents and medication. …

Some 1,500 refugees fleeing Kobani arrive at the camp daily. The Israeli team said that the condition at the camp was becoming harder as it was difficult to accommodate the thousands of refugees who kept pouring in.

In addition to the camps being too small to absorb the stream of new refugees, the aid distributed by the United Nations and Kurdish authorities is “just enough food to sustain” the refugees but doesn’t include “blankets and warm clothes” needed for the upcoming winter in northern Iraq.

According to Navonel (Voni) Glick a program director of IsraAID, the Yazidi refugees “are in a complete shock. They told us about the horrible violence they suffered. They said that Islamic State militants attack and take over an area in minutes. The refugees are in a complete shock and cannot believe what has happened to them.” Glick also noted that the Israelis did not hide their identities and though many of the refugees are from Syria “they have nothing against us.”

In August a Yazidi child was treated in Israel for a heart problem by the Israeli organization Save a Child’s Heart.
