ISIS Beheads Second Lebanese Soldier

The Islamist terror organization the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) executed a second Lebanese soldier, according to photographs posted online on September 6.

The mother of a Lebanese soldier held captive by the militant Islamic State (ISIS) group said photographs posted online Saturday purporting to show his beheading appeared to be real.

Zeinab Noun said her 20-year-old son, Abbas Medlej, was “sacrificed” after supporters of the militant Sunni group posted images appearing to show a captured Lebanese soldier before and after he was beheaded.

Medlej was one of some 19 Lebanese soldiers captured by ISIS during an August battle in Arsal, which is close to the border with Syria. ISIS killed Ali al-Sayyed, another member of the group, on August 30.

One of the likely candidates in the delayed Lebanese presidential election, Samir Geagea, argued September 6 that:

ISIS is a cancerous tumor that surfaced at first in parts of Iraq and Syria and it’s still contained to a certain point and this can be removed only if we join our efforts via an international Arab alliance…If they’re trying to intimidate us then do not fear them…Those who faced major challenges and the likes of ISIS throughout history should not fear those today.

The Lebanese are not alone in the attempt to pushback and eventually wipe out ISIS. The United States launched airstrikes on ISIS positions in Iraq Sunday by a key dam, the Haditha Dam, on the Euphrates as part of an effort to prevent ISIS from blowing up the dam and potentially flooding Baghdad. American air support helped Kurdish and Iraqi forces drive ISIS from the Mosul dam in the middle of August.

Washington is hopeful Arab states will join a broad alliance against ISIS. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Arab League head Nabil al-Arabi on September 6 to bring regional players on board.
