Breaking: Mortar Fire from Syria Hits Israel, IDF Targets Source

Today, a number of mortar shells fired from Syria exploded in an open area in the Golan Heights. The IDF responded to the source of the mortar fire.

The Times of Israel reports:

Israel responded by firing a Tamuz missile at the origin of the attack. An IDF spokesperson said the strike was successful.

Artillery from Syria has landed frequently on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights for the past week as regime and rebel forces fight over the Quneitra crossing.

On Sunday, a mortar shell struck in Israeli territory and IDF forces shot down an unmanned aircraft as it entered the country from Syria near the fighting, the IDF said.

The Jerusalem Post added that the “IDF emphasized that it holds the Syrian army responsible for all cross-border fire into Israel.”

Last week, rebel forces associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) captured a group of United Nations peacekeepers in Syria near the border with Israel. A few days later, a second group of peacekeepers fled the rebels’ territory into Israel.
