Jerusalem Day Celebration Marred by Violence

At least seven Israelis were injured yesterday in a series of attacks around Jerusalem during celebrations of Jerusalem Day, the forty-seventh anniversary of the city’s liberation from Jordanian occupation.

The Times of Israel reported that an Egged bus was stoned as it traveled on Salah a-Din street in a largely Arab neighborhood.

Seven passengers were lightly injured in the attack, including one who was taken to the hospital. …

In addition, nine Palestinians were arrested near Damascus Gate for hurling stones at Israeli officers, the police spokesman said. No troops were reported injured in the scuffle.

Earlier in the day Israeli police closed the al-Aqsa compound on the Temple Mount to non-Muslim visitors after police were stoned as a group of Jewish tourists visited the area.

According to Agence France Presse (AFP) the attack on the police occurred as they cleared the area for seminary students celebrating in the area.

In his remarks commemorating the reunification of Jerusalem, Prime Minister Netanyahu said:

Jerusalem was unified 47 years ago and it will never be redivided. Since that day, Jerusalem has developed; it is prosperous and flourishing. We meet here every year in order to ensure that this prosperity will be even greater, that the construction will be even broader and that it will flourish even more. We are committed to a rebuilt, greater and developing Jerusalem as a historical mandate of the Jewish People. I have heard that there are those who would like to cancel today as a national holiday. I say that this is not just a national holiday; this is a historic, national miracle. The Jewish People will always see to the rebuilt and greater Jerusalem.
